Perhaps I have a rose-coloured memory of my Cavern 31 score. But I plan to pass the 58000-barrier and set a new all-time personal high very soon anyway!

andrewbroad

Danny, you previously scored 26894 for Cavern 13, according to the Shoutbox Archive.

New all-time world high of 44372 for Cavern 23. You knew all along it wouldn't be easy, Mr. Bond, you knew it all too well .

New all-time world high of 42133 for Cavern 22.

Cavern 13: 26636 pts. New high on the current scoreboard. World all-time high, perhaps?

jetsetdanny

... since I don't have any MM proper high scores saved between the end of March and the beginning of July (I've got CL scores, though, hence this info).

jetsetdanny
25 July 2008
Andrew, at the beginning of May you had a MM score of 57946 pts. (No. 4 on the scoreboard back then). This might be it, but I can't tell which Cavern you reached, ...

andrewbroad

New personal all-time high of 48199 for Cavern 25 (the world all-time high is 48367 by You-Know-Who). I'll have a tough time beating that for Cavern 26 tomorrow!

andrewbroad
25 July 2008
The number 58367 has just popped into my head, but it seems I never made a note of it!

andrewbroad
25 July 2008
I'm pretty embarrassed to ask this, but do you happen to remember my all-time personal high for Manic Miner - the time I reached Cavern 31? All I can remember is that it was above 58000.

andrewbroad

The world all-time high for Cavern 14 is 29079 by Yours Truly. I also have the world all-time highs for Caverns 16, 17, 22, 23 and 28, and presumably for Caverns 1 to 12 also.

Thanks, Danny - I wish I'd kept a better record of all-time highs. I'll endeavour to do so from now on - and retrospectively, by going through the claims in the archives.

jetsetdanny
24 July 2008
OK, I've found another one. My all-time high for Cavern 14 is 28496 pts. (recorded on 03.02.2008), higher than your current score for that level, Andrew.

jetsetdanny

I may have missed something else, too, since I don't seem to have saved the MM high score table at the end of May or June.

tion.

jetsetdanny

Having said all that, I don't have the score tables from the time you competed against jogo76, so I can't guarantee he (she ? ) didn't have higher scores for some of the Caverns in ques

These may be world records, except for Cavern 28, where you hold a better result of 56659 pts. registered on 31.03.2008.

Welcome to the Flash Jet Set Willy page. Please note this is clearly a work in progress!!!
Hopefully this game will be developed eventually. If you want to influence the development, please contribute something to the forum!

Tool Shed

So far:
  • I've managed to extract the room information and guardian information from the original file. One room is shown above! (Along with some debugging data for my own purposes.) Click here to see the rest.
  • As you can see, arrows and ropes appear as garbage. But I have managed to extract the colours!

It will be interesting to see how the scoreboard will work for Flash Jet Set
Willy
. Here are my suggestions:

1. For players who complete the game, rank them by the times that they reach the toilet ("Toilet-time" column).

2. For players who don't complete the game, rank them by the number of items they collect ("Items" column).

3. All those who complete the game (reach the toilet) rank above all those who don't, all those who reach the bed rank above all those who don't, and all those who get past Maria after collecting all items rank above all those who don't. Perhaps the scoreboard could have a column to represent which type of completion the player achieved (Toilet, Bed, Maria or Items), and the time that they achieved it under a single "Time" column (for players who fail to collect all the items, the type of completion is N/A and the time is when they collected their last item).

4. It would also be interesting to see the number of different rooms each player reached ("Rooms" column), and this could be used as a tiebreaker for players with the same number of items and even the same time (which should take precedence: Rooms or Time?).

I've given the high score board a little bit of thought myself. However, I was under the impression that there's no person out there who can actually complete it without cheating! It's just too hard... isn't it? I know I could never do it, or even get close.

Therefore, my ideas were to:

1. Create a score by some function of time taken and items collected (e.g. 1000 points per item and subtract 1 point for each second taken), or perhaps give each item a score based on how difficult the item is to get, or how many other items there are in that room, or something like that.

2. Have several high score tables, one for time taken to complete the game, and one for number of objects collected, and perhaps others.

There must be other games out there with this problem. I must investigate.

4. It would also be interesting to see the number of different rooms each player reached ("Rooms" column), and this could be used as a tiebreaker for players with the same number of items and even the same time (which should take precedence: Rooms or Time?).

I would love to include all sorts of stats for each score submitted, e.g. which rooms a player went to, which path they took, etc. Keep the ideas coming, please!!

If I were going to pursue this, I would want to do it properly.

Things I want to ensure work as they did in the original:
1. Collision detection.
2. Music and sound.
3. The "foot" game over sequence, and the title sequence.
4. Custom player sprites (e.g. Nightmare Room)

Things I think I can do without:
1. The attic bug... although it's VERY tempting to put this in and claim that it's poison gas (as I understand it, that was Software Project's official response when the bug was originally discovered)
2. Restrictions arising from limitations of the original game engine, such as only 8 guardians per room, or only one ramp per room (that is a restriction, right?)

I would also want:
1. Some way for users to create custom levels, and share them with others.

What else would others like to see in?

Actually, there are a couple more things.
I want these things to work the same way as well.

And these things scare me. I haven't the faintest idea how to code them accurately yet.

1. Ropes! Yikes.
2. Jumping through ramps like in the original.

Accurate collision detection scares me a little, but I'm reasonably sure that can actually be done.

If this were my project, I'd start by translating (a disassembly of) the original Z80 machine-code to Flash, to ensure that the game-mechanics were completely faithful to the original.

Ramps basically modify the underfoot behaviour of the cell you're standing on, so they don't affect you unless you land on them as though they were Water-cells.

Ropes basically use a lookup-table, but remain one of the most imprecisely-understood features of JSW.

I don't know if you saw the link since Wednesday evening - I updated some of the code since. The ropes work reasonably well now, and are only missing pixel-based collision detection.

Your Flash JSW has spurred me into finishing my JavaScript JSW!
