Getting problems with submitting a new jsw endurance time

I'm over halfway there, jetsetdanny. Just a matter of time...

The Gold Medal will have to wait a little longer, as I'll have to play my best-ever game, and pass Cavern 43 for my first time ever in competition, if I am to beat flakothedog's 88897.

I have taken the Manic Miner Silver Medal with 49475, after losing my lives in Caverns 18 (the usual reason), 24 (stupid lapse of concentration) and 27 (a slow start spoiled my timing).

A bit more effort required tonight, but I have regained the Bronze Medals for both modes of JSW. I was actually playing for Normal Mode completion, but my form was really poor.

great...thanks Andrew!

You can, but you don't even have to. In a nutshell, the solution is to go up the middle, then right, then down, then up the trellis.

Can anyone help out with Manic Miner...I am currently stuck on cavern 15 (The Bank). Can you jump over the envelope? Thanks, Oscar

I've also grabbed an easy Bronze Medal in Jet Set Willy (Normal Mode), whilst already holding Bronze in Manic Miner, but the other games will have to wait for my assault on the podia...

Cheese, Louise: after hardly playing at all for weeks, I have just registered a score of 5185 - my second-highest of all time - to regain the Gold Medal.

I should have kept JSW64: Flash Manic Miner to myself, but when jetsetdanny came up with the idea independently, I had to reveal that I was already working on it.

Thank you. I would like to dedicate my achievement to EmuZWin2.7 spectrum emulator, to my wife for her support, and to Andrew Broad for his speccy conversion of JSW64: Flash Manic Miner!

I had feared for the last few months that this day was imminent. Congratulations to flakothedog for overtaking my Manic Miner all-time personal high of 83092 with 88897.

Yes, I read the posts in the MM forum. Brings a nice new slant to the games.

I love the idea of making strategic sacrifices! They have a place in Manic Miner, too: setting the highest score for a given cavern.

Thanks Andrew, you're right, the name's even at the bottom of the page and I missed it!

Hi JetSetWiley! It will be coming after a bit more testing of the game. I don't want to create a high score table, then find that there are mistakes in the game and have to delete the high scores because of it. But I guarantee it will be coming.

I've just had a quick go of Jet Set Willy, visiting all the original rooms. The only new room I found was "Without a Limb", although I spotted an unreachable gap in the left wall of "Entrance to Hades"...

I don't miss the colour-clash, and am intrigued as to how you eliminated infinite-death scenarios. Did you add a flag that gets set when Willy leaves a room, gets reset when he lands from a jump or a fall, and code to revert Willy to where he stood immediately before the jump or fall if he dies while the flag is set?

I miss the sound of Willy jumping and falling, and I'm not convinced that the item-collection sound is perfectly synchronised with the collection of an item, nor that the killing-sound is perfectly synchronised with losing a life (once, in "Cold Store", it was a couple of seconds later), nor that collision-detection with horizontal and vertical guardians is pixel-perfect. I find "The Banyan Tree" much more difficult than in the original.

Talking of "The Banyan Tree": you can't jump into the Earth-cell between the saw and the chip (so that you're standing on the lower Earth-cell and inside the upper Earth-cell), and the Water-cells have yellow ink rather than black ink.

You cannot stop on a conveyor by jumping against an Earth-cell immediately above your head whilst holding left or right (opposite to the direction of the conveyor) - it only slows you down, which adds an unexpected twist to "Tree Root".

If Willy falls onto a Fire-cell, you can actually see him land on it, which you can't in the original. He is still killed correctly by underfoot Fire-cells, however.

The rope-mechanics aren't perfect: for example, if you jump without pressing left or right, you jump straight up, which you don't in the original. When you walk up off the top of the screen on a rope, the top of Willy's head disappears for a moment before you enter the room above. And in the case that the room above is the current room, it is not possible to jump up off the top of the screen and land at the bottom of the screen in the way that you can in the original.

Another thing I noticed is that the item in "Swimming Pool" isn't automatically collected, as it is in the original because the Air-cells have white ink.

The Cell-Graphics Bug doesn't 'corrupt' the Conveyor-graphic in "The Wine Cellar", meaning that it appears as Matthew Smith drew it, rather than how it appears in the original.

And finally: what does "dK" (the item in "The Hall") stand for?

Anyway: it's really cool to see JSW at darnkitty.com at last, and I look forward to the high-score tables.

Thanks Andrew for your observations!

One thing I noticed is that when you walk down stairs off the bottom of the screen and reappear at the top of a set of stairs in the next room (e.g. West Wing Roof -> West Wing or Front Door -> Security Guard) Willy pauses for a frame, which I don't much care for.

I'll try and put sound in for jumping and falling, because I miss it too, however sound in Java is just so primitive (which is probably why the sounds aren't synchronised with the events).

The infinite death scenario was eliminated pretty much exactly how you said.

I'm interested in your comment about collision detection, I think maybe it's something to do about checking for collisions either a frame before or after it's actually drawn... I'll check it.

I'll look at the Tree Root conveyer belt scenario and Banyan tree irregularities, I didn't notice them! I know about Willy disappearing off the top of the screen on a rope and jumping straight up, I'll look at those too.

I left the Swimming Pool item as it is, I think it is a nice touch, and dK stands for darnkitty

Thanks again for your comments!

Another issue is that you cannot jump into a Ramp-cell at leg-level, i.e. if you stand with your legs apart, with four clear cell-columns between you and the Ramp-cell, and jump left or right as appropriate.

While not vital to the original JSW rooms, this means that you cannot jump through the ramp in "The Security Guard" and fall into "Entrance to Hades", nor can you walk through both Ramp-cells in "Cuckoo's Nest". It also removes one way of jumping through the ramp in "The Chapel".

Also, if you fall - or jump straight up - onto a conveyor, facing in the opposite direction to the conveyor, and immediately jump without pressing left or right, you're supposed to jump straight up (facing in the direction of the conveyor), but instead, you jump in the direction of the conveyor.

I found a couple more bugs trying to cross "The Banyan Tree" from left to right:

1. When jumping right into the 2-cell gap in the longest Earth-column (between the green spiral and the magenta devil), you're supposed to land inside the Earth-cell below the gap, and be able to walk right through it. Well, you do land inside the Earth-cell, but you have to hold jump as you walk right through it, and this leaves you standing on the Earth-cell.

2. When jumping right from that 2-cell gap, you're not supposed to land on the lowest Water-cell above the surface, but you do, and that means you cannot emerge from the middle of the banyan tree and directly exit the room to the right.

Also, I've noticed that sometimes when you walk up to an Earth-cell at leg-height and jump left through it, you appear to jump through the Earth-cell rather than against it, and in "Dinking Vater", you can walk left through Earth-cells at leg-height IIRC.

I have observed near the top of "Dr Jones will never believe this" that the behaviour of Earth-cells is not faithful to the original JSW.

In Spectrum JSW, you can walk left into an Earth-cell at head-height, and then jump up out of it.

In darnkitty JSW, you cannot walk left into an Earth-cell at head-height, but if you walk left up to it and then jump left, you walk left into the Earth-cell instead of jumping on top of it. Furthermore, once your head is inside the Earth-cell, you cannot jump up out of it.

Will there be separate high-score tables for Normal Mode and Endurance Mode?

HIGH SCORES ARE NOW ENABLED!

Hi Andrew, in response to your points
Thanks for reporting the strange Dr Jones bug... I've fixed it - well, you can't get trapped anymore is what I mean. It's still not completely faithful to the original.

I fixed some of the differences you've mentioned earlier in the forum, and others I haven't. This week I hope to write up a page saying what was fixed and what wasn't. Unfortunately, I've run out of time to do that today.

Yes, there are separate scoreboards for Normal and Endurance modes.

Your (matt's) scores appear under "All YOUR scores from ALL TIME" at http://www.darnkitty.com/jsw/hiscores-additional.php when I'm logged on as andrewbroad.

I haven't registered any JSW scores yet, and it will be at least a week until I do.

Site-suggestion: in the right panel, it would be better to put the "JSW Endurance" high scores immediately after the "Jet Set Willy" ones.

castortroy must have collected some items in the extra rooms. It's only necessary to complete the original rooms.
