File Access FAQ - Java version
WALKTHROUGH
Here is a walkthrough on how to use the flashcards software. This walkthrough applies to the Flash Cards Viewer - if you need help with the Flash Cards Creator - the application that actually creates the flash cards themselves - you can find a walkthrough and instructions for use on that page.
- Start up the application. In the Windows version, you will then need to select a file using File -> Open. Or, if the option is enabled, the last used file will be automatically loaded for you. In the Java version, you will be automatically prompted to select a file.
- A flash card from the first category will appear. From here, you might like to select which language is shown first, or you might like to select a different category.
- To reveal the answer to the shown flashcard, press the reveal button.
WINDOWS -> Press the Reveal button if visible, or click the flash card.
JAVA -> Press the appropriate button on your device (the "main" button).
- Now that the answer has been shown, you can simply push the reveal button again to show the next card.
- Alternatively, if you would like to rate yourself on the card that is showing, press a number from 1 to 9. If you press 1, that means you found the card hard, and would like it to appear again soon, and show again more frequently than other cards. If you press 9, that means that you found the card easy and would like to "send it to the bottom of the pile". Pressing 5 indicates that you found the card to be of average difficulty.
Any other number represents a difficulty partway between 1 and 9.
Recommendations:
Press 1 if you had absolutely no idea of the answer.
Press 3 if you had a vague idea of the answer, however you got it wrong.
Press 5 if you knew the answer after some time, or you got the answer very close.
Press 7 if you knew the answer within a few seconds.
Press 9 if you knew the answer straight away and you don't want to see this card again for some time.
- The next card will be shown. Simply repeat from step 4!

FILE ACCESS FAQ - JAVA VERSION
| Q: | How come the program is constantly asking me to confirm access to the file system? |
| A: | It's a security feature to stop malicious programs from accessing your files. Unfortunately the designers of your phone decided on this functionality, and there's nothing that I can do about it.
Well, actually there is one thing that I could do about it, and that is to get the application signed by Verisign. However this costs a lot of money, and since I am giving the application away for free, I can't afford this sort of check.
I hope you will agree that agreeing to this message each time the application is run is a small price to pay. |
|
| Q: | Why does it ask to write to the file system when the application closes? |
| A: | If you rate yourself as you go (see step 5 in the walkthrough above), the application tries to write your progress back to the file when you close the application. This means that you will get shown the more difficult flash cards each subsequent time that you open that particular set of flash cards, and your score will be saved between sessions.
You are welcome to deny the application access to write to the file system, however you will not be able to save your progress and your score will be reset each time. |
